Growing Up Black in Nazi Germany Source List

Updated: Apr 27

Hey everybody. We've got another source list for the most recent episode of History Impossible. This list felt much shorter than usual, but many of these books were pretty in-depth reads (especially Hans Massaquoi's own memoirs). I especially recommend people who want more details about Hans' life check out his memoirs, but all of these books are worth a read. So check 'em out:

  1. Hans J. Massaquoi, Destined to Witness: Growing Up Black in Nazi Germany, 1999.

  2. James Baldwin, Notes of a Native Son, 1955.

  3. Isabel Wilkerson, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, 2020.

  4. William Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, 1960.

  5. Clarence Lusane, Hitler's Black Victims: The Historical Experiences of European Blacks, Africans, and African Americans During the Nazi Era, 2004.

  6. Richard J. Evans, The Third Reich in Power: 1933-1939, 2006.
